Introducing New Chickens

Thread Starter

Hi! We are new to raising chickens and recently had an unfortunate incident where the dogs got into the coop when it was accidentally left unlatched. We have since fixed the problem, are adding a second gate, checking after the kids feed the chickens etc. One chicken from our flock survived. We will be buying new chicks. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with introducing chickens to one member of an older flock?

Alright :welcome great to have you joining the BYC flock :frow

Wow that is a problem most poultry owners have had with dogs and unlatched gates :hit

If you have a spare cage the new chickens can go in there and after a couple of days let the new chickens out and they should mingle well ......

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Sorry about the loss of your chickens to the dogs. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. Unfortunately, dogs and chickens generally don't mix well. Dogs tend to see chickens either as prey or as chew toys. You need to introduce the new birds slowly and carefully using the "look but don't touch" method. There is a good article at https://poultrykeeper.com/general-chickens/introducing-new-chickens/ explaining how to do it. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Welcome to BYC!

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
