Hello everyone,

I am newbie when it comes to raise chickens. An unusual eating behavior of my naked neck hen (age >1 year) was observed today. Upon inspection, I have found her tumid mouth and it feels like some malignant disease. In order to give an insight into this matter, here is the photo I have taken a few minutes ago.

I do not want to lose it (especially after my beloved production red died a week ago after thick mucus dribbled down her peak heavily). Please suggest some remedies to save her life if possible.

Your help will be appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

That is a very good picture. What does the stuff in her Mouth feel like is it soft or hard? Has she been eating and drinking?

She has canker. It is highly contagious and is a chronic disease. It is passed from bird to bird via sharing food and most especially water. It is caused by a protozoa. Treatment for canker is metronidazole 250mg; one tablet a day for 5 days. It can be purchased online as "Fishzole." After dealing with the acute phase of the problem you are going to need a long-term treatment to keep the issue in check. You will need to give the flock copper sulfate in their water 2-3 days a month. I can't find the dosage right now, but I am sure someone will chime in with it.

Found it- 2.5 liters of water:1 gr. acidified copper sulfate

I have not tried to touch it but it seems soft to me. She is trying her best to swallow the food which is definitely painful at present and consuming more water than before.

Thanks for your response.

I am going to give her metronidazole mixed food right now and hope it works for her.
Will also add Copper Sulfate in flocks' water after buying it tomorrow.

Don't start with the copper sulfate until after she is finished with her course of metronidazole. You don't want to throw too much at her at one time.

She is drinking because she is trying to move the growths from her mouth. She will probably need a lot of water to help her fight off the disease. It (I am sure) is painful and I'd agree to not touch it. Is her tong like that?
