Hi I'm Kiki and I'm New Here :)

My Name is Kiki and I don't have chickens yet, I am currently in the process of building my coop so i can get my chicks in April. I have never had chickens before but I've always wanted them. I let people talk me out of it, but i currently have my mason beehive, and I grow all my veggies, from sweet potato, corn, kale, cauliflower, carrots, spaghetti squash, etc, my herbs, teas, I have a mini orchard of cherries, granny smiths, Macintosh, peaches, plums, lemons, gooseberries, currents, strawberries, black berries, etc, i currently have three different types grape vines, I make my own everything and i mean everything from yogurt, cereal, milks, jelly you think of it i make it instead of buying it from the store. I can, pickle, dehydrate and store from the winter. So now I want my chickens !!!! I've been doing allot of research and i stumble onto BackYardChickens.com and i am finding allot of useful information, so i am truly excited

I have two kids a boy and a girl teenagers now and they are excited about having chickens and are helping with the build of the coop and run, My husband loves eggs and as long as he doesn't have to do to much with it he is happy and finally we have our Standard schnauzer Ty, I am hoping the intro goes smooth with him and the chicks, so i am staying positive. Me I am a computer & book nerd, my occupation a programmer .
I look forward to all the great advice and guidance through and during this new adventure.

The chickens will be a great addition too your do it your self life style I'm a fairly new flock owner m self my grandad was the bird King he had every kind you can think of (trying to remember when I was young for all those helpful hints lol) but they have been fun and after I got setup not much work at all I have not done a winter with them yet so that might be different but I don't think it will be bad at all and you have come too the right place tho BYC is loaded with info and the people on hear are super nice and eager to help with any question I have learned a lot from this group
My flock I have 2 kind of birds Whyndottes and Easter Eggers so far I like them both going too expand my flock by 6 more in the spring but not sure with witch one the EE Or the Whyndottes I noticed you live in Ny I do also upstate and we get very cold winters hear so try too research a good breed for the cold I lucked out when I got mine both ended up being good for the cold but I never even thought too look for that in a bird

Alright when you acquire your new flock you should put up some photos so we can see how you are doing and it sounds like you will do very well at poultry farming ...

Hi boomercide did you build your coop also? if so, how did you use any of the piping for feed/water? I looked up breeds that are cold hardy and watched a ton of youtube videos. I made a plan for ease of cleanliness for me and the chickens also what is best for the chickens, i am on the fence about insulation.... I don't know if i should, i want to keep it the way it was before we got so tech savvy (funny coming from a computer tech LOL) but i don't want the the girl to suffer so... I'm on the fence. i am leaning towards the Buff Orpington and Silver Laced Wyandotte i plan on getting six altogether. But welcome to you too i am super duper excited!!! Welcome, KikiM! Wow, your homesteading endeavors are impressive, and just hearing all that you do leaves me feeling exhausted! You are living the lifestyle I aspire to. Perhaps when the boys are a little older...

That's a pic of my coop my coop is over 100 years old I care take for a little old lady who is 89 and has no family left except for me and my feancia her fathers built the house and coop so it took a lot of work this year too get it going again but I got it up and running now that being said I do not have any insulation for them at all chickens have been around before people even had power they are a wild bird they will do fine but the key is no drafts can't have any drafts for them my feeders I got galvanized hanging feeder and a galvanized water feeder mine are rated for 35 birds even tho I only have 6 there is reason too this for me too do one when or if I go away for a weekend I can fill them up and no one has too check on my birds and 2 there is a thing called more Hen desease I'm not shire if you hurd of it but you will be struck with it!!! Flock of 6 becomes 12 then 18 and so on hahaha so with that I'm too effect make sure you build your coop and run bigger than what you think you need my run alone is 26 by 39 (I know odd numbers but had wire from my grandfather way back when so it was free I have silver laced Whyndottes and gold laced Whyndottes plus 2 Easter Eggers they are great birds but some food for thought is there a thing called Broodie that a chicken can do and Whyndottes it says are prone too do it I have not had mine do it yet but it's another thing too consider on the breed
