How do you know you orpingtons carry the lavender gene???????

If you didn't know the ancestry, but suspected the may carry Lavender (Lav. split), you would have to breed them to another carrier or to a Lavender; if some of the offspring are Lavender, then yes, that bird is a Lav split. But unless they have recent Lavender in their ancestry, it's not all that likely that they do carry the gene.
