agree with donrae - I think you would have done better if he gave the dog away. People bearing gift chickens - always seem to include roos. nice pullet though
 
Thanks so much for the sympathy. I was probably a little too hurt over the loss of my chicken. This was my first batch, my first loss.

I'll try and upload a new photo of Carnelian, our new pullet/hen. I was thinking she may be an Araucana or Araucana mix because she may be rumpless? Or maybe a dog got to her before she came to me, or she or other chickens plucked her tail feathers?

Edit: I should have specified that I wondered if she could be a rumpless Araucana.

On the note of the dog killing one of my girls, I was I was considering getting a dog to protect my flock. Any opinions on this?
 
She's not rumpless. It looks like her tail feathers are still growing in from the seasonal fall molt. You can see the pin feathers. True Araucana are pretty rare, and cost quite a bit of money.
 
Ah, okay. I'm such a newbie it's embarrassing, haha. Thanks so much. She's probably some sort of mix, then. Her wing feathers are so long and stiff, not something I'm used to. Her rump was completely featherless when we got her and my other chickens who all have tail feathers picked on her, poked at her tailless rump. She began growing in those pin feathers in the last two days. I thought maybe she had had an encounter with a dog or something, having that entirly raw and bald back end.

Is she an adult then? Not a pullet? She's rather small, smaller than my Barred Rocks and they're only a couple months old. None of my dozen other chickens have molted yet, but again, this is my first year. I own a few books on chickens but some things you learn from experience.
 
I'm seeing Dark Cornish rooster and hen in top photo (with the roo likely a Cornish mix).

As to guard dogs for chickens, I do not have guard dogs for my chickens but I do know that it takes quite a bit of effort to train them to actually guard and care for the birds. Not just any dog will do. Typically something like a Pyrenees or similar breed is used. You would want to stay away from the herding/chasing/flushing type breeds and of course most terriers who would spend more time chasing the birds rather than calmly watching over them.

A lot of dogs can be trained to be pleasant around your flock with you present, but few can actually be trained to be left unattended to guard your flock.
