Ok the vet finally called me. They don't have baytril, they are suggesting clavamox OR oravax (sp?) .. Any thoughts on these Kathy??

Orbax in in the same family as Baytril, so that would be my choice, but ask them what they think would be best.

I just thought I'd give an update. My girl has made a full recovery and is doing great! I still don't know what that was that she pooped out, but she is even laying eggs every day again!

So glad to hear your girl has made a full recovery! One of my RIR's just passed something similar. The color was startling so I poked it with a stick and it was as hard as a rock. It wasn't much bigger than a normal dropping.



I got curious (gross, I know) and cut it open and this is what it looked like...

That kind of looks like what is called Lash Egg. I would do a search on that as well and read about it. Still get the baytril though either way. My chicken had what seemed like sour crop. Very squishy full crop that wouldn't go down in the morning. She had weird smelling burps too. It was shortly after I started massaging her crop that she passed that "specimen": I believe maybe that thing was stuck in her crop and I worked it out. it only took about 2 doses of the baytril before she was acting normal again.

I agree, that was my 1st thought. My gal started out with the crop issue also accompanied by runny poo. I brought her in and monitored her constantly for well over a week. A couple days into it I found one of my Orps dead in her coop, no signs of illness at all. Had a necropsy done and brought stool samples of my sick girl and 2 others for testing. Buffy died of fatty liver but no worms, bacteria, cocci, etc. had been present in fecals or bird. Her crop problem has since resolved as did her poo but now I find this and more loose green poo. She definitely needs a good antibiotic, poor girl. Thanks again for your posts and wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas :cd!

Hey thanks! You too! How old are your hens? Mine are only 7 months old. It's kind of crazy because before I started out people kept saying.. Oh having chickens is so easy! But I keep seeming to have nothing but problem after problem. I love them all but it's been really sad and frustrating for me at the same time.

We have three @ 6 months, six @ 1 year and our three originals aproaching 2 yrs. The one that passed was 1 yr. The one that passed the lash egg stuff is one of the originals . I know what you mean about the problems and frustrations though. For the most part they are easy to keep. It's when we become attached and they become part of the family that it gets hard. I swear I fret just as much over them as I do with my kids when they get sick. We just have to put one foot in front of the other and do the best we can.
