Ralphie I saw your post on the Legbar . I am really disappointed in the breed and efforts for a standard . First the term duckwing is misunderstood by most . It is the blue area on a mallard wing . Compares to secondaries on a chicken . All Legbar are duckwing . Had this discussion with ChicKat before . They were saying back then that Legbar should be crow wing . Crow wing is the Birchen , Brown Red , and black copper . Black in that area of the wing like a crow's wing .
First they want a dual purpose size out of a Leghorn based breed . Difficult
Now they want crisp barring . You need slow feathering gene to get crisp barring . Leghorn and most breeds are fast growing feathers . This produces cuckoo . Blurred barring . So again difficult .
Single combs and crest do not work well = crooked combs . So difficult .
I am sure they will pick types of color that will require double mating . Cockerel line that produces show cockerels / cocks . Then a pullet line to produce pullets / hens for show . Again difficult .
Punnet probably never intended to make show birds . He was interested in genetics . He wanted to prove you could get blue eggs with single combs . He chose cream since it was a rare or odd gene . Created a true breeding golden duckwing color . Barring for auto sexing . He was having fun IMO . Just a good layer of blue eggs that is easy to sex .
Now for the crooked combs I read years ago that some of the old stringmen ( show people ) would insert a surgical needle in cockerel combs to keep them straight in summer grown cockerels . They removed them later when the comb was done growing .
So in a nut shell the standard will be stacked against you . Very old trick IMO .Only those in the know will be able to win .
Hmmm looks like a rant . OK rant over .
