Momma hen Amy has quit taking care of her chicks today, at just 5 weeks. Seems a little early but I don't remember when the last years broodies quit.
She was treating them like they were rotten teenagers this afternoon then she jumped up on the roost and left them to sleep alone in a nest box.
Erli. I really like your hen's name.
When Dixie brooded those two cockerels two years ago, she dumped them at 5 weeks. She promptly laid an egg the same day. Her hormones definitely switched on a dime. LOL. But then in the fall again she flocked up with them. And became broody and protective of them again. These 'rambunctious' cockerels.... It was the weirdest thing. Literally when I loaded them up in the car for their new homes she jumped up in the back of the envoy and and was bick-bicking away upset I was taking her boys away, near as I could tell. Keep in mind she is a silkie bantam jumping up into the hatch of an SUV. I'm hoping she'll hang out with Loretta a bit...and flock up with her a bit since they are both females and Loretta would be on her own. It will be interesting to see their relationship after a brooding.
