Surviving Minnesota!

Proving once again what P.T. Barnum said  long ago is still correct..

I am thinking of finding a support group so I can learn to live in peace knowing waterfowl exist in the world.....

Oh and for about a second and a half you had me with the Holstein colored ducks, that would be cool..but then I returned to my real world position on ducks.

that's exactly why I kept my two

Well I am back home . Got in about 10:15 last night . Trying to catch up on things . Been mowing . Taking a break .

I found a new berry growing . It is a purple raspberry with the growth habit of the black raspberry . I will have to give credit to the birds for planting it . I have several seedling plants pop up . Likely out of my purple Brandywine or Royality . They have the growth habit of the reds .

Black raspberry and purple are getting ripe . Looks like I may get to harvest most of them before my next trip .

Glad your back!

I walked out and checked my blackberries. There were exactly 2 blossoms. The plants seem to be dying out. I wonder if I can transplant them and get them growing again? What kind of soil type do they need? Ph? Fertilizer?

This was them all sleeping last night, before the storm hit.
When the storm hit they were freaking out.

It's weird how their cuteness makes me want all of them. Shame on my will power.

OK folks, I noticed something last night and now after doing some searching, I am slightly worried. One of my GLW roo's is whistling when he breaths? whistle in, whistle out. It started last night at bedtime. No sneezing and no discharge on his beak. It's very faint and it took me quite a while last night to figure out who it was. When they were all snug in their coop last night I didn't hear it but then this morning he is whistling again.....is this a rooster thing or do I have a possible sinus infection on my hands????

He is active, eating and shows no signs of being sick....and I know they are GREAT at hiding being sick so I thought I would ask your opinion on how to proceed?

I also feed Fermented feed...could he have gotten a little wet seed stuck somewhere to cause the whistle?

UPDATE: Just ordered some VetRX but it will not get here until Tuesday....anyone know anywhere close that may carry it? I am about 75 miles from Duluth. Don't know if there is anyone there who may carry it.

I was going to mention VetRx. I know FF carries it. If you are able to do so, separate him and get him started on some ACV and vitamins/electrolytes in the water. Wouldn't hurt to do that with the entire flock. Keep observing him and if he gets worse, cull or antibiotics. It could be nothing or it could be respiratory.

Ha hah, the shed sounds dangerous. But you never know when you need 30 more chickens. That's my motto.

Out of curiosity, what kind of Turkeys do you have roaming around? Next year, I'd like to get some Bourbon or Narragansett poults.

I almost.....ALMOST.....bought some Leghorns the other day. I had a moment of weakness thinking about how much I loved having them as a kid. Then, I saw their boring egg color again and was like nah.

I have all kinds of turkeys lined up for next years hatch..

I have slates, a whole kaleidoscope of colors. Check Porters rare turkeys and some of mine are shown there. I think I have 4 of my turkeys shown as examples of rare colors.

I will and do have some bourbons. I do not have pure Narragansetts, I tried but failed to get any this year, but the year is young. I should have some royal palms, Holland whites, some blacks and of course with Luck Mr T!

Quote: I kept a board in front of mine until they were ready to lay, like right before. lol, I just happened to be in the henhouse cleaning and Cluck-Cluck was all upset and agitated. a couple of days before I had opened it up for the day and put a golf ball in one. Well, nothing happened so I boarded it back up. So i'm in there cleaning a couple of days later, she is pacing and banging on the board with her beak every once in a while. so I pull the board and she goes in and lays an egg! my first egg of the flock so it was very exciting!

Quote: Oooohh yes, BLRW's are just stunning!

Coffee stopped over late this afternoon. She was "complaining" about not having any broody hens and chicks. Telling Judy how much she wanted to see chicks.

Judy told her she should take a tour of the "chick shed" to see some chicks. I must have close to 200 in there right now.

Coffee toured and left with 8 teenagers. They she complained Judy sent her to the shed on purpose knowing she (Coffee) would buy a bunch.
Hahaha! You sure do have her number! lol Congrats Coffee on the new girls!

I'd check any feed store, FF, tractor supply... I was going to suggest getting some, so glad you are. Agree that you should give electrolytes and stuff, maybe some probiotics.

So cute! I love baby ducks

Quote: Sounds like a wonderful selection Ralphie!

I feed fermented seed, should I still give probiotics? I can put extra ACV in their water (forgot the last couple of days...see where it gets me!) Can also throw in some garlic into their nightly treats and some herbs..... We have no FF yet in Duluth or a tractor supply...the closest we have is an L&M and that's 91 miles away :( with everything else I'm doing, do you think he can last til Tuesday until the VetRX gets here?

....just talked to Duluth Feed and they have 1 bottle which I can't pick up until tomorrow because I am still at work and they close at 6pm
