Tylan 50 for respiratory problems

Skimmed through the faq. Thanks Kathy!! I'll have to read more in depth when I get everyone situated for the night. I'm going to the store for supplies. I think I'm going to try to rig up a sling for Claire to try to determine if this is paralysis or if she can't even hold her head up. I was trying to do that with my hand, but then she just want to lean against either my arm or my body. Since she'll be in another coop, I'm going to disinfect the one she is in now and put another sick hen in there.. maybe with the newly discovered rooster. I saw him trying to mount one of my favorite hens, but she smacked him down quick and chased him to the other side of the coop. I have another indoor coop I am working on. I may try to finish that this weekend.

If claire is okay sitting up in the sling, then I may need help administering fluids via a catheter. Even laying down, her eyes are wide awake which is different than with Bridget and Paris. They kept falling asleep because I think they had given up. Claire just looks like she's saying 'help me'.

Diana, who I knew was sick but thought she was handling it okay, died an hour ago. I had been running around trying to get materials to save Claire. I remember Diana looking out the front of the cage at me. We had had time earlier where she ate a bunch of treats. She was kind of laying down again. I picked her up, said a few words, and her head went limp. I pulled it up to my chest and kept trying to sweet talk to her. She took three long breaths and *poof* I keep staring at her because it happened so fast. Claire is laying down on her side. She ate some a bit ago. I held her for a long time.

I feel numb.

I'm so sorry. :hit I know how hard it is to loose any animals much less pets. I have only lost one to whatever I have, but I can also identify with the stress of care though in your case like mine it is something Tylan does not deal with and you don't know what else to do. Did your vet not give you any alternatives to treat your diagnosed illness? I have contacted my vet to try to find out what I am dealing with to help them if I can. My biggest concern and relief is my chicks in the house show no signs of anything if I loose with the adults. Lucky for me mine are large fowl so they have more room to loose.
Please know I am praying for you. Don't give up on pets they are such a comfort and joy especially when you are ill.

Thank you so much for the kind words. With this may likely just so being IB.. It's a virus so there is no treatment. Antibiotics might kill secondary infections. I've found, though, that the IB causes rapid weight loss. It will take them down to their bones. I brought Diana inside earlier for food. She sat and ate, then stood and ate. Her crop was half full. I was under the impression that she was sick but having in there.

Since Claire is a silkie, I read about wry neck. I gathered all of the supplies and fed her some through a syringe. Out her back in temp coop. Woke up at five a. m., gave her more. I was then able to prop her up and she ate for about thirty minutes. Bless her heart. Her will is strong.

I need to learn to catheter feed today to get some fluids in her and the other birds. Kathy, do you have time today to talk?

I sent you a PM with my number.

Big thanks to Kathy for talking me through the catheter procedure. First few times, it kept slipping out before I got the liquid to the catheter. Just now, I was able to get 5ml directly into Claire's crop! I'm not sure that she has had that much water in a few days. I was still a bit stressed when pushing the liquids in, but then I felt her breathe so I knew that I had the right hole. She tolerated it pretty well. It's awkward because I haven't figured out how to hold her but wow.. you can put a lot of fluids in the birds that way as opposed to dipping the beak or using the syringe. If I could turn back the time and use this on Paris or Bridget or Diana, things might be different.

I did weigh the other members of the flock. They have all either stayed the same weight or have GAINED! They were all feisty today so maybe we are turning the corner on this disease. Claire is still isolated. Her right leg is growing stronger but the left remains weak. Both legs respond well to being pinched... so there is still feeling there. I discontinued the Tylan 50 a couple of days ago on her since it did not seem to help and also because I've heard it can cause the muscles in their legs to be sore.

Just updating everyone. I know the catheter thing can be intimidating but it actually is a lot easier than I ever imagined. The tube just kind of slides right on in when you have it in the right place. Kathy is awesome!!

So... perhaps it was just wishful thinking that we were turning a corner. I posted on another thread a few days ago that Claire passed away. At the time I had two sneezing, but weren't losing weight. Now.. almost the whole flock is sneezing and wheezing. I know the vet said the symptoms come and go with stress. The babies just reached maturity (which is why one of them is crowing). For some reason, Meredith decided to molt. They are wheezing and coughing. I can't give them Tylan again. This would be the second or third round. Most have lost at least a 1/4 of a pound in weight. Meredith has lost .5 in 2 days. They sound awful. They can hardly breathe or swallow. Too many sick to nurse back to health individually. At this point, It's easier to sequester the ones that aren't sick... but those are the roosters.. who seem to be surviving just fine. I switched back to LS-50 earlier today, which is what the vet had originally ordered to help with secondary infections for the IB. You add that to the water for 14 days. It's hard not to baby them, but at this point.. I'm almost done. They are suffering. I am suffering watching them suffer. I ended up in the E.R. over the weekend so I'm trying to take a step back to heal. Any advice would be appreciated.

Please, go easy on me for starting another antibiotic. It's the only thing I know to do. I did swipe some VetRX on some of their beaks to help them breathe.

I am so sorry. I wish I could offer more than words. This has made me decide to just buy eggs and hatch out what I want to add to my flock.
I really hoped Claire would turn a corner. That is one brutal virus you got. It is OK to know you have reached your limit and step back especially when all the effort you have put in has not been able to stop this. Maybe just monitor and treat aggressively as you can the strongest of the sick.
I hope someone else has real help for you.
