I've never owned quail before, but my husband and I wanted to try to raise some for egg and meat purposes. I just have a couple questions. I got 3 females and a male Jumbo Bobwhite quail today. The research I've done says to feed them high protein food but NOT medicated. The person I got them off of told me to feed them medicated food or put antibiotics in their water, could someone clarify this for me? I got Manna Pro gamebird and showbird feed today for them.
Also, like I said I plan on raising some for meat and eggs, I plan on giving the birds about 14 hours a day so hopefully they lay some after they chill out and are less stressed about the new place. What would be the best way to go about hatching some eggs? Any info welcomed!! Please and Thank you!

Quail are pretty awesome, small but fast maturing and good layers. I have never kept any myself, but I have done research on them.

Different people have different ideas about medicating their poultry, but I personally do not see a need to use it unless the birds are sick. I have raised chicks on soil, towels, paper towels, wood shavings and more without any antibiotics or medicated feed and never lost any to coccidia or other parasites (at least that weren't already sick upon acquiring).

14 hours of light is a good idea. Make sure that the cold air doesn't blow up through the wire floor of their coop, since winter is nearing this may make them less likely to lay. I'm no expert, but I know my chickens don't lay as well when they are too cold, and they also can get frost bite more easily.

There are some excellent threads on hatching quail eggs, so I hope you find the help you are looking for.

Best of luck!
