Stripes the mutt cuckoo marans - roo??

Hey all,
What I thought originally was that this bird when developing marans coloring, was a pullet because of the lighter barring.

Now, I'm questioning the sex because of the luxurious green colored feathers sprouting near the tail and by the wings. Also, the comb/wattles are brighter red than her fellows. Note, however this is my only cuckoo marans in the group.

Roo huh?

You can also see the pointed hackle (neck) feathers. Cockerel.

I'd assume their genetics work the same as Barred Plymouth Rock in that the lighter birds are males due to females only carrying one copy of barring and males carry two. The Plymouth formed with the Dominique which is cuckoo pattern.

Cockerel.

Breeder of Dutch bantams, Wyandotte bantams, and a few exhibition rabbits.

Feel free to ask me questions about chicken and rabbit care, breeds, and showing! I'm always happy to help!

Nature's first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf's a flower

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay. --Robert Frost
