Help Please Can anybody identify this and tell me what to do?

Yes, I will be sure to keep you posted. The vetricyn has helped, one eye is almost perfect and the other is not so goopy. His eyes have not been sealed shut in the mornings anymore.

I just purchased some nutri-drench.... would this be good to dose him individually? If I am reading the bottle right it says 1 ml for every 3 lbs of body weight. How many days should I give him the nutri-drench? I wish I had purchased the vetricyn sooner.... it makes cleaning his eyes so much faster and easier. He hates the spray, but seems to feel better after I use it. Thank you for your suggestions.

Well, nutri drench is limited in scope as far as what it supplies. You can give it to him, but it is more of a pick me up for ailing birds that are failing fast. It gets in their bloodstream quicker than anything else and can give quick energy to a dying bird, but I don't think of it as a complete vitamin/mineral supplement. I would give it to him for a few days. It would definitely make him feel better at least.

Thank you for posting this link, and wow!  His eyes look nothing like this..... just runny and kind of bubbly in the corners, can't seem to keep his eyes dry.  Not sure what it is I am dealing with as the others are perfectly fine and haven't developed eye symptoms.  Whatever he has mustn't be contagious.  Any and all suggestions are welcome, the tylan did not clear it up so I stopped after 3 days.

You could try Baytril.

Ailikat is this a silkie too? I just looked at your pics on my laptop, WOW!! Is there a chance that this is a sunburn? That "crust" is not all from the eye/sinuses is it? Have you tried DE dusting of it?

I know it has been a while since I have been on byc The holidays and 8 month old infant have kept me very busy..... Along with taking care of my chickens. I have to post an update on my silkie hen. I have some pictures to show her progress. After my last posting I gave her more of the kitten revolution above her neck where she couldn't reach it..... She has made remarkable progress even since I took these pictures. Her feathers are growing back on her face and ears.....her beard is coming back, her skin is black again. She is even getting the blue color back on her ears that was gone for so long.

I know these pictures still look pretty bad....... But this is so good for how rough of a condition she was in. I will post more pics within the next few days when my daughter can hold her so under her wings can be seen.... And the blue coloring that has returned to her ears. Hopefully this can help people who may be dealing with this type of illness. Again, I want to thank everybody who gave such wonderful advice and took the time to help me.

That is great news! Maybe it was some type of mite or worms (revolution treats worms too) that was ailing her. It is strange that it was just her and none of your others though. Mites can get around.
How did the little rooster turn out? Did he ever heal?

I know this is an older post, but I was referring back to it because of the mention of using oregano oil. Which oregano oil do you recommend? I did purchase some Ropa poultry complete, but it is quite costly, especially if one plans to use it daily in the waterers. What kind of oregano oil? And how much do I add to a gallon of water? Cinnamon oil is also supposed to be beneficial, but I am unsure of what kind and how much to add to a gallon of water. I was hoping somebody would know how to make a homemade mix that is similar to the Ropa complete.

Hi. I'm not familiar with Ropa poultry complete. What is it? And what are you trying to treat for? Oregano oil is said to have many benefits and good for fungal, bacterial, and parasitic ailments. I have not found a dosage for it. I found some in a local health food store and I'm sure you can find it online if need be. Make sure you get the ingestible liquid capsule and it should be organic and contain at least 70% carvacrol which is the beneficial part of the oregano oil. I am told it is very bitter. Your chickens may not take it so readily in their water. I imagine you would just pierce a capsule and squeeze it in the water. It will likely settle on top. Personally, I would just pop a capsule down their throat for several days if you have one ill. It's used as a natural antibiotic, instead of medicating your chickens with traditional ones that involve tossing eggs, etc. I guess it just really depends on what is ailing the bird. Here is an article to read about it and what to look for. There are many more out there. http://www.naturalnews.com/024685_oregano_oil_of.html
Sometimes its best to try to prevent illness in your flock than treat it. A good multivitamin/mineral supplement in their water, a few days a week is the best thing we can do to help them fight off what's ailing them. In summer months, fresh clean water daily, shade and fresh feed is best. Hot summer months can lead to moldly feed in just a few days time, so don't put out more than they eat in a day or two.. Check the manufacture date on your feed bag and try to use it within three months of manufacture in the summer months.
