Once my chicks have outgrown the cage I move them out to the brooding shed and I have to admit I do find the lamp a worry but touch wood I've not had a problem but there is always the risk. That's why I like the Eco glows because there is not the fire risk as with the lamp.
Sounds like your daughter is taking good care of them and that she enjoys raising them. The feathered legs won't indicate boy or girl it's more than likely a what type of breed they are.
