I have 5 Rhode Island reds, about 4 months old. I ordered 5 pullets. But one is very large, that chicken has no spurs or signs of any but it is a big chicken with big feet!! It is going to be very big. I am wondering if that chicken is really a rooster? When do roosters begin to grow spurs?
 
At 4 months a cockerel would have very distinctive feathering. The body shape and stance will be more upright and the redness and development of the comb and waddle will happen long before spurs.
 
Well I am really thankful. This chicken stands up very straight, is much bigger than the other chickens, has enormous feet, has a bigger tail and more colors. It also has a large bone structure and already it is very strong! Soooooooooo, it might be a rooster and if it is, I will have to get that collar that someone invented to keep the crowing down; because I live in a county which allows backyard chickens, but no roosters! I did not want a rooster and ordered 5 pullets. What does one do when that chick turns out to be male rather than female? This is now 4 months later and a baby chick will not do. I would like to keep this chicken having raised it from a baby. Well we will see as time goes on.
When will this bird if a rooster begin to crow?
 
If you aren't allowed a rooster where you live, you should probably just consider finding him a new home....

The three birds in your avatar are sex links. Is it one of them? If it's a sex link like them and red with white leakage then it's a pullet just like they are. Sex links are mixed breeds bred specifically from two breeds to give 100% sexed by color at hatch offspring.
 
I will take a picture tomorrow and post it. But it has a larger comb and does have small wattles which the other hens do not have. I did not know to look at the wattles. But I see them now. Thanks.
 
Wow, NO it is not one of them. It is from a hatching in August this year. But will you explain more about what you wrote. I was given those chickens and identified them as Rhode Island reds, which I understand is a cross bred chicken. What does using SEX mean in this situation?
