Hello, after looking through a few other threads i believe i have a depressed chicken. We have 7 in our flock, 2 roosters and the rest are hens. This one 'rainbow' hen, Daisy, is on the bottom of the pecking order. I notice shes always on the outskirts of the group, like when i first come to the run gate everyone else will greet me but she will be hanging all the way in the back. She gets bullied out of the way when theyre pecking at feed, all the hens peck and bully her (but no blood) and she doesnt run from me when i go to pick her up like the rest do. She looks so sad and sluggish. She still eats and drinks and gets enough, I dont think shes sick or anything, shes been like this for some months now.
It started when one of the rooster took a big gash out of her neck when trying to mate with her, we had just moved them into a bigger pen and maybe it messed up something. Since then shes been looking beat down. I walked out and saw she looked tired and found a gash on her neck. I rubbed some neosporin on her and gave her some TLC for some hours then put her out again, made sure no one bothered her but she did look so sad then. Its been months since that happened and I thought she would perk back up after a while but she never did.
What should i do? I've thought of taking her and just having her as more of a house bird. I have two bantam hens that I keep separate and I thought about putting them together, permitted that shes not mean to them (or vice versa). I've also thought about getting one more bird since it is an uneven number and I've read they do better in pairs. Or should I just take her out and spend some quality time with her? Anything to give her a little confidence !
