FAVUS, Dry Comb. . Or nothing at all!

I was on a BackyardChicken hunt to find out what is going on with my rooster's comb. . . .It went from dry comb to all my chickens have FAVUS! So, I went out and did a chicken photo shoot for the experienced eyes out there!! The rooster's comb has been like this for a bit, but getting whiter and drier as time passes.

Extra factors:

I live in Southern Pines, NC.
The weather has been everything from wet, cold to really warm out.
They are free birds. Roaming the entire backyard and eat everything they can get their beaks on.
Uhmmm. . . Their coop is cleaned everyday, I keep pine shavings for the floor like a big hamster cage.

So if you experts can let me know what you think, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Those birds are fine. No favus. You could use some petroleum jelly to moisturize, but even that is not necessary. If you decide to use it, apply lightly so as not to muck up their feathers and make them less weather-proof. They look good to me, though.
 
It's getting to be winter. The combs tend to wither a bit in lower light and colder conditions. Combs are imperfect indicators of health in birds because they change in appearance to a variety of stimuli- temperature, light duration and intensity, hormone fluctuations, place in the pecking order, nutritional balance, circulatory issues, heart conditions- these are all things that will make a bird's comb change its appearance. If your birds are showing no other signs of a problem, then do not rely on comb condition to be a sign of a problem.

Favus is also very obvious. If you had favus, there would be no question of whether you had it in the flock or not. It is VERY present when it is present.

The flock looks good. Nice pics, by the way. I can never get a decent shot of my birds. They are too...active.
 
That's good news! I always worry about these feathered things since I am new! The rooster stopped crowing too- which is a blessing in disguise since I was about to get rid of him(I live in town). . But that and over reading strikes up some paranoia!

Thanks for the compliment on flock! I spoil them dearly even though they have yet to give me any eggs!!
