Welcome to BYC! Avian Influenza in lame terms is the bird flu. H5N1 is the strain (variety) of the virus. It's a zoonotic disease. Means it can transfer between birds and humans and back again to birds. There used to be no vaccine since the virus would mutate before a vaccine could be made. Now there's a vaccine made by crossing the Avian Influenza with New Castle Disease. Waterfowl tend to be a vector (not get it but carry it). If a flock tests positive for Avian Influenza flocks with a certain radius are culled (killed). Symptoms are flu like, lethargic, diarrhea, problems breathing, and most birds that become infected die soon after being infected with it. It was able to spread across the US because of wild duck and geese populations that would come in contact with domestic fowl and then the virus could spread through feces, body fluids, and I believe eggs as well.

This is all the info I can remember off the top of my head and making it as easy to understand. If you have other questions feel free to ask.

Welcome to BYC! I have an article about Avian Influenza on my website...https://bantamfan4life.wordpress.com/avian-influenza/

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
