I am thinking about posting a predator identification chart in the Learning Center. Would this be helpful? What is the opinion?

It would be helpful for those that like to know what is killing their chickens. Sadly for the chickens predator ID is not enough protection.

I think it always helps to know what you are up against. A racoon will do different things to get in than a fox.

Personally I did the protect against everything except bear. (no bear in the middle of town here)

A predator ID chart would be very helpful for new members and folks just stopping in via Google search to try to ID what killed/damaged their birds. I am frequently surprised that BYC doesn't have one yet. People come here, describe a kill scene, and it is usually pretty easy to ascertain what killed the birds to experienced keepers, but not everyone is experienced as poultry keepers.

The chart should include paw prints, scat pics, describe what a typical kill scene looks like for each predator, describe each predator in detail (including breeding season and migratory habits), include ways to deter each predator that are tried and true, and offer advice on whether to remove the predator or just build up defenses to protect the birds.

You are going to be busy, Bigwig. That's a lot of info and pics to organize into a workable "chart". Instead of a chart you may want to organize "Predator Pages" or have both (a quick search chart that links to an in-depth page).

Good luck.

Thank you! After the "chart" is completed I will be happy to except information that I may have forgotten to post or just did not know.
