I've been on here for a few months, but every now and then there are contests and things that require you to link to your introduction, which I never did. So here goes...
Well, when I was younger, I spent my summers on my Aunt's farm, where she raised chickens, cows, goats, and sheep. It was good for a city girl from Seattle to go to a farm for a few months every year. It gave me a very rounded experience..
City meets Country.
I was finally able to quit my job this year, thanks to my husbands business that he started in 2011, and have been raising our two kids and doing things around the property. I decided over the summer that I wanted us to be more self sufficient. We hunt and generally get enough meat to last the year.
I decided I wanted to breed Dorkings since they are one of the most ancient breeds, rare, and apparently VERY tasty. I am fond of the Colored and Red Dorkings.
I also am thinking about Ameraucanas. I have a White Ameraucana trio at the moment, but have a BEAUTIFUL buff Ameraucana hen as well, which I'm looking for a cock/cockerel for that's up to SOP. Not an easy mission, I've found out. This is part of the reason I'm wanting to go with these particular breeds: I want to provide chicks for the "hard-to-find" breeds and help out the Rare breeds. Or at least whatever I can do.
My favorite girl, at the moment, would be a White Ameraucana Hen that just started laying within the last 2 days, named Pearl. Got her from Pips'n'Peeps. She has the most wonderful personality and has taught everyone else that I am not someone to be scared of. They all come up to me now for treats.
My current flock includes:
2 White Ameraucana Hens
1 White Ameraucana Cock
1 Buff Ameraucana Hen (trying to find a cockerel/cock for her)
4 Leghorn Cockerels
1 Leghorn Pullet
1 Silkie/Dorking Pullet
1 Silkie/Dorking Cockerel
2 Red Dorking Pullets
1 Red Dorking Cockerel
5 Jumbo Coturnix Quail
3 out of the 4 Leghorn Cockerels are named Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Dinner...edible... Those are really the only ones I don't mind getting rid of at the moment.
My husband and I have been married for 5 years and we have 2 wonderful children, a boy that is 4 and a girl that is 2. We have a black lab, named Kia, that is wonderful and great with the kids... not so much with the chickens yet... she'll learn. We live out on 5 acres an hour east of Spokane, WA, outside of Spirit Lake, ID. Everyone within a mile of us either has 5 acres or more, so neighbors are few and far between (and the ones we do have are pretty awesome). Hubby and I chose this location 4 years ago because we wanted our children to be able to play outside with their imaginations, ride their bikes, and not have to worry about cars driving by or strangers nearby.
