Ok so all my other laying hens lay in one box and i have one special hen. First she a golden sexlink, and a newish layer started some time this maybe last month anyways she decide started off laying in a nest box (different one from the others), then she took up laying in the middle of the i guess raised floor( its as the go to the nest and under the roost) any ways i messed that nest up hoping she go back to the boxes and if not i figured she just remake the nest but nope she made a nest on the ground inside the coop and laid her egg. I guess i should be happy it is in the coop and not in the free range area but still why not the nesting boxes.

Where is this hen in the pecking order? If she's laying at the same time as the others, but is lower on the pecking order, that may explain the difference in the choice of laying areas. I've literally had four hens at a time in a nesting box - two facing one way, and the two on the top of them facing the other. No one would give up or move to the other two nesting boxes! It had to be THAT one.

She might just be uncomfortable in the coop with the others in there too. Hens like privacy when they lay, and generally (at least in my experience), if there is more than one hen laying at a time and in a different box, they are pretty close to each other on the pecking order.

Mine dont seem to care when it comes to the other hens however one della she puffs up and growls if a human comes near lol our cat garfield can be laying in the box closest to her and she doesnt care.
