What's the reason for a standard size hen to lay such a teeny tiny egg? It's so cute and tiny!
It is called a wind egg among other names. Likely it has no yolk and only a little albumen in it.
Sometimes new layers produce them, sometimes older hens at the end of the laying cycle.
Usually it is from some piece of tissue being sloughed off out of the ovary, infundibulum or even magnum that tricks the reproductive system to react to what it senses was a yolk released.

Interesting! Thanks for the explanation. None of my hens are old, and they have all been laying since summer. I hope whoever laid it is going to be okay. I was just so caught off guard to find such a teeny tiny egg! This batch of chickens has really provided me with quite a learning experience, they have had so many issues that I have never encountered before!!
The first time I had an egg like that show up I wondered who put an acorn in the nest.

I agree that new layers and old hens can lay them but I have also had hens that do not fit into those categories lay them also.
The hens are still healthy and laid normal eggs afterwards. So, unless it continues, I would not be concerned. I have only had chickens for two and half years or so and have had two wind eggs in that time.
I have bantams and both of the below were photographed next to bantams eggs:
They did not have any yolk when cracked open and they are kinda cute!

hehe... "flatulence" eggs? lol! I am not quite sure what to do with mine, maybe make a hole and blow out whatever is in there and keep it. its so tiny and cute lol. So far that has been the only one I have seen! I only have 3 ladies laying green eggs, and they have all been laying normally since.Howdy MESOFRUFFEH

You don't get very many of them over the years unless there is a problem. Whenever I get one, I save it to bring to my chicken classes.
