I found this little one running down a busy country road on my way home from work last night. Can anyone tell me the breed age and more importantly the sex? You can't really see from the pics but it has drizzled feathers. Also it's legs are light pink/white colour. I was thinking a cuckoo Maran? I already have 9 hens but unfortunately I can't keep roosters

I have a feeling it's a he but hoping it isn't so I can keep it. There is a rescue place near me so either way a good home will be waiting. Thanks

I'm curious to see what everyone thinks... Maybe a frizzle? The feathers are really strange for a standard LF...

I would say roo just based in the comb, but without knowing how old it is, or breed, it could easily be a hen, maybe a bantam...

Barring says pullet, if we were to go with just the barring; it could be a hen that's laying, with the red comb...

On second thought, if its still peeping, its a cockerel.... too young for a pullet to have a Red comb and still be peeping :p

It's featherers do look like a frizzle as I have 4 other frizzles. It's still not very big and very skinny at the moment. I am hoping for a pullet so I can keep it. It's a beautiful bird

Lol I didn't really give you any definitive info other than the frizzle part :D

Sorry about that; I feel bad when I think roo, say pullet, then have to admit I'm not sure ROFL ;)


It's hard to tell from a picture with no comparison of size or body language :D

The head reminds me of a Legbar. That one saddle feather I see hanging down makes me think cockerel. Good of you to take him/her in.

could be a Marans/Legbar cross, something like that. Someone's Olive egger project, not sure if they're as popular on your side as they here in the States.

X2 on donrae's post. Most cockerels begin crowing from 4-5 months old, but some of them can take considerably longer, and on rare occasions nearly a year.
 
Thanks all for your replies. He is a cutie and I'd love to keep him but I have neighbours and my Hens make enough noise as it is demanding food lol. I was thinking he's been dumped too or maybe just got lost. He's so friendly it's a shame I won't be able to keep him

I thought I heard him making a little clucking noise when my other hens were out but maybe this was wishful thinking as then he was making a little squeaking noise. Do they cluck a little before they crow? When I first got my hens I was accidentally given a cockerel who had been pretending to be a hen, even sitting on eggs (he was in with a larger cockerel) Once we got him home and put him with my hens he started crowing. The lady couldn't believe it and said he had never done it before. Once we took him back and she let him out free ranging you couldn't shut him up.
