Roofing Material

From the photos, I see why spending a lot on a roof would be a problem. A cheap alternative would be to cover the roof in cheap plastic sheeting, box it in to a depth of 4 inches with recycled pallets , fill with potting soils and light gravel and plant grass seeds. Water, fertilize and you have a water resistant roof that will keep the coop cool. Just a thought.

Greg, this is something I first saw in person when I lived in Germany. I always thought that this type of roofing/construction was the best in energy efficiency, expense and eco-friendly. I have never tried it. I would LOVE to have the guts to do something like this some time. Question about this though. How long would something like this last before the underlayment (plastic) gets holes and the decking rots? Are we talking 1-2 years or 10-12 or even 15? Florida has more bugs and wood rot than anywhere but maybe the rain forest this is weird to me.

Awesomely cool idea though.
