We used these at our previous place in our fieldstone cellar a few winters ago when we had -50 windchills in February.

I didn't feel comfortable letting my girls work in there due to the cold.

Don't be fooled by the more expensive ones. They break after a few uses.

Thank you I do believe I'll order a couple of these and put one in my attic too. Wonder if they have them for rats?

I get a 4 pack of old fashioned ones from the dollar store (we always have a few packs on hand). Instant kill and I can pick up the trap with a pair of needle nose and throw it out - very sanitary since I don't reuse them. It would take 80 mice to make the Electronic one pay for itself (more if you include batteries) and I haven't killed 40 mice yet in my life.

This response Samantha LW sounds exactly like my experience. The rats came in from the fields and started living in the chicken coop. A friends Rat Terrier fixed all my rat problems in a couple of days time.

eww but where do you set them up?

I'm not sure if they're available for rats. I think I'd run away screaming if I ever saw a rat. I squeak loud enough when I see mice

We use one spoon of peanut butter to bait them.

The instructions we got with ours suggested getting multiples and letting them air out between kills so the dead mouse smell doesn't scare away others that might enter the trap. We bought a 5 pack on a warehouse deal deep discount.

I'd only ever seen a handful of mice in my life before I moved to New England.

Oh there are tons around in the fields - I would guess within 500 feet of my house, there are at least 1000 mice, but they don't get in the ducks' house (there is no food there) and they don't come around the food much because we have a Grandpa's feeder so there is only a small amount of spillage and the song birds usually police up the area so there's not even much food for the mice around the food. If they did show up, the ducks would chase them (the ducks chase the squirrels so I am sure they would chase a mouse). Our house is sealed up pretty good too, but about every second or third winter, one comes up into the kitchen through the hole in the floor that the kitchen sink drain goes down through. Easy solution: trap with peanut butter is under the sink, back behind the garbage can. Every time we change the garbage bag (at least every other day), we check the trap. If a mouse comes up and never returns to tell his family, they stay outside.

As I replied above, I don't have a mouse problem where my ducks are. If I did and it was small, I would probably make a small box the ducks couldn't mess with to put over the trap (wood and chicken wire?) If it was a big problem I would probably get a cat.
