I have 2 male and 4 female black sweedish ducks and 1 male and 2 female Cayuga ducks. They are about 7 months old and laying about 4 eggs a day. I live in Connecticut and have a pond in my back yard but it dries up on the summer and freezes over in the winter when there is water in it. I have a small kid pool that I keep fresh water in for the ducks and they seem to love it. I am concerned about this winter. On the mornings that we have a heavy frost the pool freezes over until late morning. The pond is not really accessible for the ducks that is why I have the pool for them. I would like to know of these breeds of ducks need to have a "swimming" area year round. Also how are they in the snow? I house them in a 20' x 20' pen with a 8' x 8' "house" with a heat lamp in it. They only go in the "house" to eat.
Are they hardy enough to survive a New England winter with the habitat I have created for them and what do I do about the swimming water issue?
