One of our speckled sussex chickens recently started avoiding the roost at night, and would sit on the ground and star gaze; her head touched her back! She was acting perfectly normal during the day time, eating drinking, pecking around, etc... but now she is doing it progressively more often during the day. At around 11am she had already started to stargaze.

We think she may have injured herself trying to fly over the 6' fence. Does this sound like a physical injury, or something else?!?! It is weird because it has been a progressive thing, it did not just happen. We will check tomorrow morning to see if she has been eating. So far no one is picking on her, so she is staying with her sisters.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

Wry neck(crook neck, torticolis, star gazing) can be a symptom of a neurological problem from many causes, such as head or neck injury, vitamin E and selenium deficiency, and from certain viral and bacterial diseases, such as Mareks, avian leukosis, and others. Poultry Nutri-drench or Poultry Cell vitamins 3 ml orally per day can treat it. It can be a frustrating and sometimes long term illness. She may need help eating and drinking enough. There are many threads about wry neck if you do a search at the top of this page. I hope she recovers soon.
