Hi from Christchurch, New Zealand. I haven't been on this forum for a few years, and wanted to show a pic of our current hens that we adopted a couple of years
ago. They are Bella, a Light Sussex, and Stacey, a Silver Laced Wyandotte. Both girls are very healthy and never get sick, unlike
the Hybrid Brown Shavers we adopted at the beginning of our journey with hens, and are now sadly passed.
These girls are docile and the Sussex very friendly, sprinting up to you when they are out free ranging (the Wyandotte is shy).
Heres a pic of them

Thanks Bridebeliever! Things here in Christchurch, NZ are coming along slowly but surely after the earthquakes.
Our area got badly damaged around the border of our neighbourhood, so lots of houses being rebuilt or repaired.
We were lucky that our house only needed minor repairs and our road didn't get liquefaction or broken up.
The roads around us are getting constantly dug up and pipesrepaired though, so lots of constant detours.
Love coming home at the end of a hard day doing the road detour
obstacle course and see our hens contently at peace chilling out :)

Well that's good to hear! I'm originally from California, so I know earth quakes, but I've never been in one the size of which you all experienced! My friends parents had to move out of their house it was so bad...and the roads..well UGH! Nothing like seeing road turn to liquid! Did you have chickens at the time when this happened? Did you notice if they acted different around that time? I know animals are very perceptive.

Thanks Teila! I had to take the photo sideways as her chest is actually quite dirty! Lol
They free range first thing in the mornings (otherwise they yell the place down in the early hours!) and love to rummage around in
the sandy soiled garden, so it was a good thing it was raining today when I took the photo. :)

Very pretty birds!

Hi - yes the roads were rather interesting in the largest earthquake with driving through geysers and vertical shafts of asphalt, up footpaths etc, to get to my young son at school. I have a new compassion for anyone dealing with a natural disaster of any kind.
I actually got into having hens as an outcome of the earthquakes - my friend's house was badly damaged and had to move to a new area and home, and couldnt take her hens with her, so I adopted them. My friend tells me they squawked a lot. I did hear that farmers in the 7.0 earthquake heard their pigs squealing and cows braying really loudly just before the earthquake - must have felt something through their hooves prior to the quake? Interesting eh!
