Need help! What kind of bedding is best?

I would use pine shavings more so than straw because it absorbs better. when it gets really dirty that's a sign its time to change it out. some people(depending on your climate) use sand and say it works great. For me the pie shavings don't work well in the nesting boxes, but I never found anything that works amazingly for it.

Hope this helps and I hope you have a good time with your chickens!

Also, welcome to byc!!!

I like sweet timothy hay for the nesting boxes. I buy it bagged for small animals in the pet section at Meijer. It's cut in nice sized lengths and fits it the boxes perfectly.

Nest boxes
In my nest boxes I fold a feed bag to fit (nest boxes are 1 ft³). When a bag gets soiled; fold a new one; pop out the soiled; pop in the new. Feed bags are a nylon mesh bag.
Frozen poop just peels off in below freezing temperatures and just flakes off in summer when left out in the sun to bake and dry.

I have 65 trips around the sun it is the best method I have stumbled upon.

Make sure the twine is removed from the open end of the bag it can get tangled around your birds.
