Hello again everyone, I'm Val and like the title says, I'm not a new member, but as my old email address was hacked last year, I haven't been getting updates.
I am the one whose chickens were attacked and killed/mauled by a dog in my own yard last Christmas Eve. You all gave great advice on what to do and how to heal Rusty, one RI Red hen that was mauled survive. I have some info from that incident to pass on.
I got restitution for Beep, the RI Red hen that was killed outright. $10. The man was cited and received a misdemeanor for not having control of his dog AND for both of them trespassing onto private property. In order for this to Happen, you must have your property posted clearly on all sides (I did previous to this).
As for Rusty, many of you gave excellent advice on something to use for her deep wounds. I swear by Vetericyn now. Pricey, but if you want to save your animals that have been wounded severely, I have to vouch for the product. Rusty's feathers came back in and she's out on the nest now, laying her daily egg.
My mother passed away in March from ovarian cancer and my neighbors decided that I had had such a bad couple of months, they went together and got me four more peeps. Three RI Reds and one blue Ameraucana. I now have eight hens, five reds, one big, fat ten year old buff orp, one Easter egger and Mowgli, the Ameraucana whose centerfold graces my profile.
All my chickens come when called, allow me to pick them up, sit on the porch swing and sleep, and Tim comes in the house each morning for her daily bread. They chased the paper boy yesterday trying to get something to eat from him. Just daily antics that make everyone around here laugh.
Glad to be back and have figured out the reason why I wasn't getting updates. Talk later,
Val
