Greetings from the Gulf Coast of Texas

Thread Starter

I'm not really new to raising chickens, but it's been quite a long time ago. This adventure with my chickens started this past June.

I  wanted 12 chicks, but I accidentally ordered 15 beautiful Golden Laced Wyondotte chicks and received 17.:ep

So I gave 5 of them to one of my students who already had several free range chickens.

So, now I have 12 beauty queens. who have just started laying eggs.

My chickens aren't backyard chickens. They are front yard organic weed eaters.

I found BackYardChickens by searching for questions that I had about raising chicks and I kept being directed to this website.

My other hobby is playing classical guitar and teaching 3 classical guitar orchestras. (60 kids) I'm a retired music teacher, so now that I've retired, I can have fun.

Last spring my mother gave each of my 3 sisters and me $1,000. She wanted to see what each of us would do with her gift.

One of my sisters went on a cruise, another bought a new wardrobe and my other sister used her's to visit her daughter in Seattle.

I used mine to build a hen house and raise chickens. (My mother thought that I had fallen out of my tree.) She asked me if I had lost my mind. This has become a fantastic project that has involved my entire family.

I have a small Chihuahua mix dog who is terrified of the chickens. The chickens chase him as well as the rabbits who used to come out of the woods into the yard. They even chase me when they think that I have a treat.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in Texas (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me). If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Actually it's a good thing you dog is afraid of them.  In answering posts here, many times folks have said their Chihuahua, yorkie or doxie   has massacred their chickens. Better that they have a fear of them.  In time your dog may even come to like them.  If they see over time she won't harm them  - the chickens may  ease up on her.
