I'm feeling a little overwhelmed this week. Long in short: Over a month ago, I picked up 4 pullets from a chicken seller over the mountain. They had been isolated from my other chickens for about 3 weeks. All seemed well and I let them comingle with the other chickens out in the main yard (They have their own coop and little yard area). Recently, however, I noticed a couple round worms in their yard. I am not sure which of the 4 pullets deposited the worms, so I got some wazine and wormed all of the chickens accordingly on the 1st of Dec. I went back out to check on them just around lunch time and there were multiple piles of worms. I scooped them out of their yard, went back later and found a few more piles, and removed them also. Everyone seemed ok. The following morning, my silkie began acting aloof. Not interested in eating. Huddling up with the other girls, or not coming out of the coop. I set up a box for her to bring her inside. Just around 3PM, she appeared to convulse and then she died. All of the other chickens who received the wormer were fine and continued to be fine. Until yesterday. One of the girls, my cream legbar that was with the silkie, now too seems aloof. ruffled feathers. sitting with her eyes closed. This behavior is intermittent, because she does wander with the other ladies and peck around. She is not all too interested in her feed, but she ate some scrambled eggs and oatmeal last night, and again this morning and she is drinking. So I sat and watched her today. I haven't seen her poo, however, I think I happened upon her poo just after she left it, and it seems a little watery, Proper in color tough. I have seen her sneeze a couple times.. and open her mouth an equal amount of times. I also noticed my oldest gal, who is quite bossy and always on the go, just kind of chilling next to my rooster coop. I noticed she opened her mouth as well, like the cream legbar. I walked over to her and she got up and went on about her business.. scratching and pecking and looking for food, as she usually does. I was planning to follow up on Thursday with another wormer, as I had seen on here to do.. but i am not sure if i should with the current events?
THEN, a lesser emergency.. I have a rooster that has been shaking his head pretty regularly for a couple weeks now. I have checked his ears for mites. Nothing. I have checked his body for mites.. an occasional white mite..checked his throat. he is not gaping at all. just shaking his head. I did put a drop of oil in both hears, incase it was mites.. still nothing. he is eating, drinking and acting just fine. I've scoured the BYC for the head shaking issue, and found quite a few possibilities and resolutions.... Needless to say.. I am a little saddened and frustrated because I am trying really hard to make sure all my kids are taken care of, however I feel like I'm losing the battle. Maybe it is just me being sensitive. LOL..
