Newbie interested in having chickens

Thread Starter
I am a newbie when it comes to chickens. I mean I know that an extremely protective hen is probably going broody and things like that but I have never had chickens myself. I would probably want to start with full grown hens and once I get comfortable with hens, get 1, just 1 rooster so that I don't have many aggression issues. Is this a good strategy?

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

The Learning Center is the best place to go especially when first starting out with chickens. There are articles on every topic you can imagine.

As for whether you go with chicks or point of lay (POL) hens is totally up to you. It might take longer for an adult bird to warm up to you than one you raised from a chick but it can be done. Some breeds will go broody and some are not inclined so if you want to hatch chicks, do your homework on breeds. As for getting a roo, it's important to have enough girls that he doesn't overbreed them...the recommended ratio is 1 rooster to about 10 hens.

Hope some of that helps.
