Two More with No Tail!
Well my next two chicks hatched! One is black and one is a very light silvery grey. I do believe they are both without a tail. That makes 50/50 for tails vs. no tails on these first 6 chicks! This trait really does not matter to me, but it's still fun to see the outcomes! The new chicks had no problem integrating, and this morning everyone was snuggled together in one grey menagerie!
Here are some pictures of the new two:
One bummer I've had so far is i discovered that the late hatcher from the first 4 has a deformed foot.
He seems to get around and be thriving fine still, but it's kinda sad.
I'm gonna let him go and just see what happens.
Last of all I thought I'd show a picture of my brooder set up. The gas station nearby is always throwing huge cardboard boxes into their recycle so I use those to brood. I also use shredded paper that a local business puts out to be recycled. Free and abundant.
I use a standard really messy feeder, a poultry nipple in a juice bottle is hung on the stick across the top of the brooder for water (I place a small plate under it to catch any drips), I also keep a small box on it's side in the brooder. The chicks love to hide under it and are very quiet.
Lastly, I lay a babygate over top so the kitty (and the baby!) don't get into the box.
So there you have it!
