Just got a coop and 3 Ancona's. They are about 5 months old. Can't wait for my first eggs! Looking forward to learning lots of good information.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. We have a lot of members from Florida including NorthFlChick who posts regularly on this section.) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Welcome! I'm from Florida too. Panhandle. We had Fowl Pox run through the area this summer, along with others. The others killed some of our birds, so be sure to ask around and see what diseases affect your area. We learned the hard way, and I don't want anyone else to go through that. You can check with NPIP if you do have problems your vet can't handle. They did the tests for our birds free, but I finally found a vet who would see "exotic animals" like chickens. You may already have some horse meds on hand that you'll end up using for the chickens, in which case you're ahead of the game. Be aware that you have to ask the state veterinarian to vaccinate for CRD. I don't know if the same is true for Fowl Pox. I bought that vaccine on Jeffers Livestock and used it before I found out Florida even had rules about vaccines for chickens. Turns out you can prevent some diseases but not others. So study chicken diseases and you'll be prepared before they happen. I wish you and your chickens many happy years together!
