My dad is trying to hatch some eggs in our still-air incubator. We start them in a forced air with a Turner, and then place them in the still air a few days before they are due to hatch. Most of our chicks never made it to pipping this time. However, we have a chick alive that has not yet pipped, and we need to know how long we should wait before assisting to give him/her air. Thanks!
 
Hello, this is my first time on this website so I have no idea how to use it, however, I do have a question about hatching my first eggs.

They are supposed to hatch today, I woke up this morning at 8 and looked into my incubator to see that 3 of my babies have poked a hole into the outer shell. It is now 8 pm and the membranes are white and dry and they have not began to zip. I am very concerned. I have no idea when to intervene or even how to. They are moving and occasionally they will chirp and poke their beak out. Help?!
 
We are on day 28 I believe. There is an internal pip yes. This is our fourth batch and it seems like if they don't hatch the first day that the others start, then they most certainly don't hatch at all. I'm not here mostly to keep an eye on them while incubating, but I think that my dad may be doing something wrong in their process of incubation which causes this.

Day 28. Yes it has an internal pip. This is our fourth batch, and it seems like if the chicks do not hatch around the same time as the first ones, they won't ever hatch. Is there something to explain that?

That all seems pretty normal to me. They probably pipped because they needed air, and have not yet zipped because they are still absorbing. Don't intervene yet, give them around 24 hours or maybe even longer. :) depending on temperature throughout incubation can make the difference in when they hatch. It can make the difference of about a day.
 
Haha! I started to wonder if you were hatching something other than chickens.

I agree not to intervene yet. If 24 hours goes by and no external pip then you can think about putting a small hole in the top of the egg so it can get more air. If you intervene too early you can actually kill them if they are still absorbing everything.

As for past troubles and hatching difficulty I would want to know how stable your temps are during incubation. What humidity do you run at days 1-17 and at lockdown? Where are your eggs coming from? Are they from your flock? At what point are they dying? Eggtopsies are not fun but will help to determine your problem. I would suggest doing them after this hatch.
 
They have externally and internally pipped,they just have not zipped yet. Their beaks keep point through the little hole lol I'm just concerned and worried. I have no idea what I am doing, this is my first hatch :)
