9 week old EE's

It can be deceptive, that's for sure! I agree, pullets. I have one, Dumb Daphne the Flock Complainer, that I swore was a roo with those pointy looking feathers. Nope, she's a girl

Blooie, I needed a really good giggle and "Dumb Daphne the Flock Complainer" sent me over the laughing edge

and inspired more creative thinking in the naming of our mostly nameless flock. Also a beautiful example of nature playing tricks on our eyes, especially your first picture.

Glad Daph could give you a little chuckle. She's a puzzlement, that one is. No egg from her since last year, and I have no idea why she's still out there freeloading. She thinks she's a rooster - no crowing but she is the flock supervisor and complainer. Daphne hates everything! Always vigilant, I swear she knows the difference between the garbage man pulling up and someone pulling up to visit. Checks out and then ignores the garbage truck, keeps her eye on the visitor from the time they pull up, get out of the car and walk up to the house to the time they leave. <sigh>

Ida, a red sex link, was our first egg layer. Dumb Daphne used to pace the helper board in front of the upper nests. She cackled and yelled at Ida through the entire process. As soon as Ida was done, Daphne stopped pacing and positioned herself squarely in front the nest opening, then gave Ida the stink eye. Ida would stick her head out, Daphne would peck her hard on top of the head scolding her the whole time, and Ida would come the rest of the way out, duck her head, say, "Yes ma'am. Thank you Ma'am." and scurry out of the coop as fast as she could. Then Daphne would break into the egg song. We laughed proudly the first time Ida nailed her back. The look on Daphne's face was priceless!

Stoopid chicken!

LOL I love it! Our EEs are both in the bottom 3 of our 12 week old flock and I confess are not my favorite birds. Hoping they'll at least give us some interesting eggs! Toying with "Matilda the Mischief Maker" for the chicken with the pointy feather appearance- she's almost always the cause of any big flaps, jumps onto the roosting pole without regard for the 3 she's knocked off. She's a little problem solver though- the only one to go at the kale leaves from up top instead of getting pecked by "Bonnie the Beak", the barred rock who decided she's #1. Her hardest pecks are usually reserved for Matilda and usually it's totally deserved. Nobody has challenged "The Beak" yet. Looking forward to the egg laying antics -- still have a few weeks-- everyone's just 12 weeks for now.

Egg Antics are here! I'm happy to report that both Easter Eggers laid their first eggs in Week 22.
The smaller grayish one (Bert) laid a beautiful green egg while the brown one (renamed Earney) lays a brown/pink egg. (as in Bert and Ernie because their hair reminds me of the EE's beards)

Bonnie the Beak (the barred rock) has taken a liking to pecking the **** out of Earney in particular at laying time, so Earney has seemed to adapt by laying her egg at the same time as Bonnie AND squeezing into the narrowest, tightest spot to lay her eggs. Smart little chicken!

In the photo below, Bonnie's in the box inside the tank and if you look reallllll close, you can see Earney's tail sticking up between the tank and the edge of their area. Hopefully in their new area where the boxes are higher and there's more space she can keep it up.
