Ok i am a little on edge because the first two hatches failed except one baby duck. I have chickens now on day 20 in a Brinsea eco 20 and i opened it to add a little water. There are no external pips yet but i heard peeping. Are they going to be ok or did i maybe shrink wrap them? I read the incubating 101 post and it said i could open briefly to adjust humidity but was that before internal pips?

They will be fine. Hens actually get up off the nest every single day for about a half hour everyday to eat, drink, and poo; and they still manage to have chicks hatch. Opening an incubator a bit to add water isn't going to harm them.
If you hear them peeping, it means that a few have pipped internally. External pips should be happening within the next 12 hours. Good luck!

Chickies soon. Now comes the hard part, watching them pip, and then waiting for ever while you pace the floor and worry b/c you think they've all died b/c they stop moving and talking while they rest up for the zip and hatch.

Thanks so much! I was hoping i didn't kill them at the last second. The first two times i tried ducks and they all died but were about 3/4 of the way developed and the second batch i had one duckling but the rest never pipped. Figured out all of the thermometers were off by quite a bit. So now having solved that problem i was hoping i didn't do something dumb to ruin it. Thanks again to eveyone for your help and reassurance!!
