Why are boys always prettier?

You have had lots of great info already but I just thought I'd add what I know. When a female chooses a mate based on aesthetics it is known as sexual selection. It has happened in many species including humans and birds of paradise (which are totally amazing and you should google them).

For example, in chickens, females will choose a mate based on their plumage and their ranking in the pecking order. This is beneficial so far as natural selection goes because it means the rooster will be able to protect the hen and any chicks from other chickens as well as predators. It is also good to choose a mate based on plumage because if they have beautiful plumage, it is a sign of the health of the rooster. The same thing happened in humanity - millions of years ago, males were more likely to choose female mates based on their hair length. As a result, over time females evolved to have longer hair. The same thing happened with roosters, because the hens chose roosters with impressive plumage, they evolved to have more impressive plumage.
