New Quail hutch!

My father made us a new Quail hutch for our breeding Quail, for Christmas. It's 5 feet long and so easy to feed and water them now. I love it. :)

 
Looks nice! I make my own hutches for my buttons, so I get them just as I want them. My father tends to have his own ideas about how things should be made and if I ask him for help, he wants to make all the decisions, that won't do. So he gave me a drill (and several other tools) for Christmas, seems he's getting a little tired of me borrowing his stuff all the time ^^
 
How often do you have to change the shavings? Im fixing to get into coturnix quail and trying to figure out how I want to build my pens. Cant decide between wire or shavings.
 
I have not been breeding long but I uses shavings for my indoor winter breeding groups and wire for the rest. Wire is a lot cheaper and easier in the long run. I keep groups of 5 on shavings and change the beding weekly. PS my hens like the shavings a lot more because they can play in it so I put cat boxs full of play ground sand in each of my wire pens so that they can still take dust baths.
 
Oh and lugnut when I was getting my first breeding stock I didn't know this but its really important to get as high quality birds as possible so that they pass on the straits you want and not bad quality( mean birds breed little mean birds) I would strongly recommend a local breeder or James Marie farms, his birds are great and he is very nice! I messed up my first incubation and he sent me new eggs at a large discount and walked me through it, only bad thing is he take a long time to ship.

Nothing, really :D I got a male and 3 females for my birthday in February - I wanted them for the bottom of my budgie aviary. But then, they started multiplying and now I have 17 of them ^^ Did buy two of the 17, for new blood, but I sold several of the chicks too. Still have 8 roos I want to get rid of though.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have an order from Robby that's suppose to ship this week. Wire has been what I've planned on using but I think shavings would.be easier cleanup and less odorous on multi level pens. However, wire is probably what I'm going to go with
 
Cool what color are you going with? Why make them multi leveled? Are they going to be indoor or outdoor? I have had luck with building a very large pen out side and then splitting it into sections I could post a photo if you want. all the dropping just go onto the ground under the pen and you can shovel them out every 1-2 weeks.
 
I'm getting the jumbo meat makers. At this time, I'm not worried about colors. I'm going multi level for space. I've got a 2'x6' pen with 3 levels figured up, I've just been.debating on wire or shavings but wire is probably going to be my winner because of not having to buy shavings
