Do you think it will be okay to put chickens in a greenhouse?

im looking to get some chickens and was thinking of putting them in the greenhouse, we have a friend who keeps chickens and she said it would be okay they would be out most of the day, another few questions what do you put in the nesting box? and would you put sawdust on the ground for them to roost in?

Welcome! this is a great site full of helpful people. When you get a chance check out the learning center, it is a good place to get lots of information.

I think your biggest concern would be humidity. Chickens do not do well in to much humidity, especially when it is cold. So you would need to make sure you vent the coop/greenhouse well. Other then that, and making it predator secure, it would probably be fine.

I put straw in the nesting boxes and floor, but that is what I have available. Use what is easiest for you to find, straw, grass clippings, woodchips. I do not know about sawdust, if it is too fine and dusty, you might have breathing issues (but I am not sure)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on OrganicFarmWife. You would really need to have some great ventilation vents on the greenhouse as humidity really builds up in them. Feathers are wonderful insulators and moisture is a much greater danger than cold. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thank you I live in England so it never really get too hot

The problem is that it gets cold enough in England that if moisture builds up in your greenhouse, the chickens' skins will become damp even through the feathers and they will get chilled. You need very good ventilation in the winter as well as in the summer. Winter coops need to be draft free, dry, and well ventilated.
