Well, I moseyed on over to the local farm supply store today to see what came in yesterday. No EEs, like I was hoping, but I did pick up 3 Australorp and 3 Barred Rock pullets. (After telling DH that the Barred Rocks were indeed "those speckled things" he thought that was a good thing because "they're kind of pretty" ) Next year I will order from the store rather than where I got them this year. I can get them within a week of when I order them, and the prices are a bit lower. I don't think I have to pay shipping that way, either. I guess I'll wait until next year to get my EE's and Welsummers. I could order some now, but the ones I have are already about a week old and I don't want to have that much of a difference in age. Some of the chicks I got on Tues. are already showing some major wing feathers! It always amazes me how quickly they start to feather out. For those who might be wondering, I did take those 6 chicks and put them right in the brooder with the others. They're close enough in size and age that I don't believe there will be a problem. They ran right on over to the rest and mixed right in. Happy Chick Season, everyone!
Mrs. K, how many eggs did you set in that incubator at school?
PS - My mom has at least one green-egg laying hen and a rooster, so if I get a broody hen this year, I might just get some eggs from her and set some green eggs and hope for the best.
