Drunk/falling over chick
Featured Stories on BackYard Chickens
I'm probably just overly concerned since one of the four chicks did not make it. However, today One of our new chicks was standing up looking kind of stumbly, fell over and then rolled onto its back and legs in the air and didn't really fight to right itself. I scooped it out and it seemed kind of limp. After about a minute of examining her I set her down on the ground outside the brooder and she started pecking and being completely normal. Is this just a case of a really sleepy chick? I've never seen one on its back before. They are about a week old. Thanks!
Hi! Do you have them on medicated feed ? Coccidia can cause those symptoms. Vitamin H20 can help too. Hope it was nothing and your little is fine.
We do not have them on medicated feed. I think coccidia may be an issue. We lost a chick two nights ago but I can't be sure if it was coccidia or the temperature got a little lower than should have. Coccidia didn't really cross my mind, but I'm so glad you mentioned it! After losing the chick, I got some probiotics and antibiotic to treat the remaining two. I'm so glad I did, because they were both letharigc and barely wanted to do anything yesterday. Every hour to ninety minutes I would check on them. I made them each drink some of the water with the antibiotic and probiotic in it, each time I checked. One chick seemed as though it was doing really poorly. Today, they both seem much more alert, peeping a lot and eating and drinking. I'm hopeful they will make a full recovery and have been moved to a warmer brooder spot inside the house. Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome! I'm sorry you lost one. They can drop from coccidia so fast. They should bounce back for you.
