After lurking for many months...

I sell point of lay pullets or younger hens for $20 each. Price goes down each year, and I usually give multi-bird discounts.

Shipping birds older than chicks is usually prohibitively expensive.

Start haunting your farm and garden section on CL. I've found there are several breeders within say 30 miles of me, some with nice stock of rare breeds. Or maybe look for a local FB group, under chickens, small animals, homesteaders, things like that. You never know who around you may be raising some nice birds.

I did find a few breeders here in Ohio, which is nice. doing all this ground work in prep for purchase in a year is helpful, but can be overwhelming.

What can I expect to pay for a hen or pullet, and would I have to pick up, or do breeders ship hens and pullets?

Apologies for the very late response.

Hatchery quality, you might pay $12-20 for a younger pullet (8-16 weeks). $25-$30 or so for a pullet or hen who is laying or point of lay. Breeder quality (meaning from breeder stock and much higher quality than hatchery stock but not quite show quality) you might expect to pay anywhere from $25-$50 depending on breed and age. Show quality, upwards of $70, $80, $100, but a SQ bird probably isn't necessary for your situation.

Depends on the breeder. Some don't ship at all, some ship seasonally, and some will ship whenever they have birds.
