Fairly New at Being a Crazy Chicken Lady

Some people love cats, other dogs. Some ladies dress their kids in cute southern boutique wear. Most little girls love horses, and other kids want a Guinea pig just like their school pet. Well, my family and I do it all.

But I've simply become the crazy chicken lady of our area thanks to our nine year old daughter. It all started when she asked for hens for ninth birthday in April.

She's an animal lover and a girl dreaming to be a barrel racing champion in the days to come. We also have a handsome son that loves being a "hungry farm boy" and chases the chicks around in play, but we're trying to teach him better manners than that wink.png

My husband is a K9 sergeant with our local sheriff's department, so to say that we are animal lovers is almost an understatement at times.

Then there's me, the crazy lady who just hatched 18 chicks in a preschool class room during the month of December. Better yet, we picked 15 to bring home. I now spend my nights worrying over their warmth and which ones will be roosters.
I am also a blogger over at Www.mommy2charli.blogspot.com

Where you can find posts pertaining to our crazy life, chick incubation a and other family fun things.

What are you best suggestions for a first time chick owner? They are now four weeks, and growing bigger each day!

Make sure that they always have clean fresh water. Over time you will see if any are roosters. I often worried about my chick's when I first got them but eventually you will get more used to them and not constantly worry about them. I liked to give them treats and watch them chase each other to try and steal them (you will find that they are very entertaining).well I hope this helped good luck let me know if you have anymore questions.

Our coop. I should've mentioned that our older hens went to new homes in the fall. We will only be keeping 10 hens from the 15 I have. We only seem to have room for 8-10 in our coop comfortably.

My advice to first time chicken owners would be to check out the Learning Center...it's full of very good articles answering about every poultry-related question a new person would have:

But no matter how much someone reads about chickens, they'll learn a lot simply by spending time with them, watching their behavior and becoming familiar with their birds personalities.
