Hello! We are looking to start raising chickens this spring, and have a few questions about it. We have a fenced backyard - wooden, about 6 feet tall, so we'll enclosed. With the right kind of breed can we let the chickens roam our backyard? We are debating whether to build a stationary coup/run and let the chickens roam the years during the day, or have a tractor that we can move around our raised garden beds during winter.

We're looking forward to getting to know you all! Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi :welcome Clark

Glad you could join the flock! The learning centre has a lovely section on getting started raising chickens. It has some good articles on what may be best for you. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck getting your chicken adventures underway.

Whether to have a stationary coop or a tractor is an individual choice, they both have pros and cons. A couple of those are:
A stationary coop is usually more expensive but will last for years. It can be built to be more predator proof and offer the chickens more protection from the weather.
A tractor doesn't cost as much to build but may not accommodate as many chickens (especially if it's a tractor you want to move around).

Figure out what best suits your needs, there isn't just one "right" way. If you use the Search feature in the upper left part of the screen (under the logo), you can do a search of coop vs. tractor and find a lot of posts about this.

Good luck to you, thanks for joining us!
