Hi all,

I'm new and am trying to figure out the breeds of my chickens.
This one is mostly black with a red face. The black feathers on her back and wings have a blueish green tint to them that really shows in the sunlight.
Her right eye has a very small pupil that makes her look kinda evil and I like that about her.
I figure she is older as she lays very large eggs that don't fit in the cartons.

Many thanks for your help.
I love reading the crazy posts on this site and there is so much great info also.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the reply. She came with two other black hens that have much less red which is only barely noticeable on the chest feathers.

Any idea one this one? She looks like a big pigeon and lays brown eggs with tiny white spots. M
Cheers.

Yep, the others are Black Sex-Links. They're a great breed.

The one you pictured could be a variety of Swedish Flower Hen.

Hmm I would never have thought of that one! I posted on the SFH thread to see what they think too.
Thanks!

Here's my others I don't know either. Lol
This one I think is a red sex-link. She is my only hen with Spurs.

This one I have found several breeds that look similar. So would love to hear what people think. I have two the first one is just finishing a molt and still has short tail feathers and thin spots on her face.

This one I think is just a barnyard mix that could be anything.

Thanks for the input!

You're right, the first is a Red Sex-Link. The second one is a Delaware hen. The third could be a Black Sex-Link rooster, where'd you get him?

Well I agree on all but the last as she is definitely laying eggs. She's just getting going since I got her and is having a few rough goes. The first egg she laid for me was a really long egg.
Then she had one that broke on the way out. I know because I saw the shell hanging out of her and the other chickens got to it before I could do anything. When I opened the nesting box it looked like an egg perfectly placed in a cold frying pan yolk unbroken somehow.
Then just today she was in and out of the coop and nesting box for over an hour and then she laid a sandpaper shelled egg.
It is possible she has laid some normal ones as I don't see who lays every egg but the ones that I know have been her have all been abnormal.

I am a little ashamed to admit it but I got these 8 hens from a kijiji ad. The people said they had a "hobbie farm" with about 50 chickens. The young Son took care of the chickens and my kids paid the son directly just $35 for 8 hens.
I was told they varied in age from 1-3yrs old. However they also clearly told me that the black hens were "Kentucky Reds". So who knows really.
