Hello! I am new to raising hens and have started with three baby chicks. They are about 6 weeks old and almost fully feathered. We have one of each of the following breeds: Buff Orpingtons, silver Laced Wyandottes, and a Black Australorp. The BA is the one I'm concerned about. The back of her neck has a patch of quills without feathers. I can't tell if the feathers are still coming in or if she is getting pecked by one of the others. Anyone know?

This is a photo of all three of them.

The Buff Orpington is always the calmest, slowest and the others always seem to hide behind her. I also wonder if she might be a HE?!
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

This is normal molting. See the "skin" on the feathers nearest the skin? When feathers emerge they are called "pin feathers". This skin protects the feather and the blood that feeds the feather as it grows. Chicks will molt about 6 times until they are of laying age. So you will see quite a bit of this sort of thing until the are 5 or 6 months of age.

Perfectly normal! :)

Cute babies!
