picking up easter eggers and silkies today!

I've done a lot of reading on silkies and very excited to get my two silkies today! They're straight run but I'm hoping for at least one hen so that I can determine how good they really are to use as broody hens, as I hear they're great for that. Are there any known ways to increase a growing hens "broodiness", so I call it? Even in our barn it gets cold and sometimes I cannot get out there fast enough to retrieve the eggs and put them in the incubator, so a silkie for sitting would be so great. Thanks and I'm excited!

Maybe get some fake eggs and make a big clutch in a nest box or wherever you want the broody at and hope she sits on them.

you shouldn't have a problem, silkies really are determined moms! Two of mine just went broody in the middle of winter. making the nest boxes nice and cosy seems to help too.

I came home with FOUR silkies. Once I saw those silkie chicks I couldn't resist. I'm so excited to watch them grow, they're already doing very well in our brood box. Thanks for the advice, I do keep fake eggs in the nest box so I hope that encourages one day to sit on the eggs. What great birds they are already turning out to be. The easter eggers are skiddish, i'm sure once they settle in and I handle them often they will open up to us.
