Hello Everyine!! Brand new here & starting soon I will be the proud owner of some backyard chickens!! Excited to learn from all of you & I hope to not annoy everyone w/ what I'm sure will be numerous questions. I'm doing as much research as I can before hand & doing my countdown to chickens while I'm researching!! :D

Hi and welcome to byc - great to have you onboard. I'm sure there's a state thread so check it out. You must be very excited to be getting your flock soon. Lots to read, but nothing beats hands on experience!

Good luck

What breeds are you planning on getting? There are so many to choose from, I thought picking out that first flock a bit mind boggling (and fun).

If you have questions, feel free to ask. Also, the Search box (upper left corner, under the logo) can be really handy for finding information.

Good luck to you, nice to have you here!

I have yet to decide what breed I am looking for. I'm thinking Buff Orpingtons.. haven't made the decision finalized yet! If anyone has suggestions on a chicken that will be forgiving of my inexperience and a good egg layer, that'd be great. Super eggcited because I got the coop today so things are moving right along!!

Hi, welcome. I too am a new chicken keeper and started out with 2 Buffs, 1 Easter Egger, 1 Black Australorp and 1 white Winged Demon (she may be Leghorn). I LOVE the Buffs and Australorp. They are sweethearts. However they all are doing their thing and pretty much let me know what they need. I chose to let them free range all day and they go in the coop at night on their own and also go into the coop to lay. So I guess it's just their natural instinct, I've never had an issue. Wasn't sure if I would have to round em up for bedtime and such. I did adopt to older hens (1 of the buffs and the white winged demon) and they have pretty much taught the 3 babies what to do so that helped a lot. Good luck with your new babies!! How many are you getting and are you getting chicks or pullets??

I plan on getting 4-6 chicks & brooding in the house. My oldest is 16 & he's already naming chicks we don't have yet!! Billy... I have no idea where he came up with that!!
